エレクトロニック・アーツは2008年11月4日（火）、Xbox 360向け新作ソフトとして『Left 4 Dead（レフト 4 デッド）』を2009年1月に発売すると発表した。
『Left 4 Dead（レフト 4 デッド）』は、ゾンビだらけとなった街を舞台に、協力者たちと共に決死の戦いを繰り広げるホラーアクション・シューティングゲーム。開発は『カウンターストライク』『ハーフライフ』を手がけたクリエイターが所属することで知られる米・バルブ社。これまでの作品を通して洗練された協力プレイ、シングルプレイシステムを盛り込んで、「ホラーアクション・シューティング」という新しいジャンルに挑戦している。
4人のサバイバー（プレイヤー）たちが協力して、病原菌に冒された大量のゾンビや恐ろしい感染者との戦いを繰り広げる「協力ゲームモード」には、都市から田舎まで幅広いステージが用意されている。また、「Director AI」と名付けられた先進の人工知能機能が本作には採用されており、プレイヤーたちの行動や行動統計に合わせて、敵の数や強敵の出現頻度などが最適なものに調整される。
一方の「対戦モード」では、プレイヤーは人間か、4タイプの感染者から1つのタイプを選び、対戦を楽しむことができる。感染者は銃器を装備することができない替わりに、圧倒的に強力なミュータントアビリティを使えるなど、独特のプレイ感を楽しむことが可能だ。
