KONAMIは、人気サッカーゲームシリーズの最新作となる『ワールドサッカーウイニングイレブン 2009』を、2008年11月27日（木）にPS3とXbox360で発売すると発表した。
『ウイイレ 2009』では、新たにUEFA（ヨーロッパサッカー連盟）と正式契約を行い、欧州クラブチームの頂点を決める「UEFA チャンピオンズリーグ（CL）」モードが実装された。本モードでは、大会テーマソング「CLアンセム」が演奏され、大会公式ボールなども用意されている。
また本作では、操作感やAI、選手の動き（モーション）が、これまでのシリーズから全面的に改良された。具体的には、ボールを持っていない選手が自ら手を挙げてパスを要求する、など、よりリアルなサッカープレイが楽しめる。
さらに、映像、音声のなどの表現にも改良が加えられたほか、新たな時間帯設定として「夕方」も導入されている。
なお、2009年には『ウイイレ 2009』のWii版、PS2版、PSP版の発売が予定されている。このうち、PS2版とPSP版には「CL」モードは搭載されない。
